About to begin
So we are finally here, at HOTCASS, waiting for the first performance. Since undertaking a series of interviews in December, the team at Act for Change have been working to produce an original play that draws from the experiences and knowledge of the James Town community.
Working with themes of modern slavery is particularly challenging, not least because the testimonies that form the basis of the play have been given by members of the community. The fact that modern slavery exists in James Town and that people who experience it then have to find ways of rebuilding their lives is hard and what this play is trying to do is develop spaces for conversation, where the community can come to discuss taboo and deeply troubling issues.
We’re not sure what we’ll find. It might be that many of the people who see the play won’t see an issue; won’t see a connection with their own lives, community or history.
Whatever emerges, it is important to acknowledge that this piece has been made by people who are deeply committed to making a healthier, more cohesive community and who acknowledge difficult truths in order to create change.
