Stephen's Blog Entry

The project "Hidden Histories: the untold stories of James Town and slavery" has started and it’s great to be back in James Town.

The project is a collaboration between the University of the West of Scotland, James Town Community Theatre Centre (Act for Change) and James Town Walking Tours.

What we’re doing with this project is to try to tap into the oral histories of the area, uncover the stories that have been forgotten or ignored, and try to tease out the links between James Town’s past and its present.

We’re focusing on slavery: the links between James Town’s built environment, narratives of slavery and links to contemporary slavery.

Collins Seymah Smith and Nii Kwartelai Quartey are working tirelessly to use their networks to inform the project and we are all surprised by the stories we are hearing and the amount of people who are happy to be generous with their time.

With a week to go in this first phase of the research, we will try to post fairly regularly.

If you have stories of James Town you would like to share, please reply to this post.

Though it's at its early stages, it is already availing the uniqueness of the legacies of slavery and exploitation in James Town's past and present and likely to point a way forward for liberation, equality and solidarity

I am really glad you are touching on contemporary slavery.
Can't wait for the findings of the research.

I was amazed to some revelations about James Town historic slavery. The interviews open up a Pandora box which comes up with many hidden stories untold about James Town. Personally, i think James Town history and community has not been tapped to its full potentials. There's more we can do and hope this project will set the ball rolling.
